Installing EV Charging Infrastructure for Porsche

Porsche is one of the world's leading automotive manufacturers, specialising in luxuruy and high-performance vehicles. As such, the EVmarket is a key target for the car manufactuter.

Challenge

In preparation for the launch of the Porsche Taycan, ABM was tasked with designing the electrical infrastructure to support the installation of the Porsche custom designed and built vehicle chargers to support new car sales and aftermarket servicing departments.

Each site was different and there were various chargers required in strategic locations within each dealership. Sales required a 13-amp connection point to enable charging demonstrations to customers.

Solution

Servicing bays required 22kW AC chargers installed. Customer parking areas were fitted with 2 No 320 kW rapid DC charging stations and a number of 22kW AC chargers. The installations were also supported with server connections for metering and billing requirements.

ABM designed Porshe's electrical infrastructure to support the custom chargers, which were some of the first rapid DC EV Chargers in the UK. Part of the design included the connection arrangements for a new separate supply chain from the district network operator (DNO), which varied from site to site.

ABM worked with Eland Cables to bring a new cable to the market, which supported the needs of these high-powered chargers. A generic electrical and ground works package was developed as the starting point for each installation. As the project progressed, the infrastructure became increasingly sophisticated to reflect Porshe's unique requirements.

ABM conducted site surveys to ascertain cable routes, charger positions, existing below ground services, and issued layout drawings to show charger positions, car charging bays, and cable routes in relation to other site services.

Benefits

  • Client sites supported: Porshe's 17 sites were all supported with dedicated installation projects, under a single contract, so that each could operate independence and enhanced efficiency.
  • Supplier coordination: Porsche was able to leverage ABM's specialist suppliers and attained essential infrastructure, including custom cabling to facilitate the needs of its high-powered EV chargers.
  • Critical EV network support: ABM designed and developed the electrical infrastructure to support Porche's sites, in addition to arranging connections for a separate supply chain from the DNO.
  • Enhanced customer service capabilities: With newly-installed and optimised EV chargers in place, Porsche was able to provide customers with additional support.

ABM supported 17 of Porsche's sites, each with unique hardware and electrical requirements
